Cervical Spine Surgery: What You Need to Know

At Atlas Spine Institute, we offer a range of surgical options to treat cervical spine conditions when nonoperative care has been exhausted. Our approach is patient-specific and focused on maximizing outcomes while preserving motion whenever possible. Below are some of the most common procedures we perform:

Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF)

This procedure is designed to relieve pressure on the spinal cord and nerve roots caused by a damaged or herniated disc. Here's how it works:

  • The problematic disc is removed through the front of the neck.
  • A spacer is inserted to maintain proper spacing between the vertebrae.
  • A small plate is placed on the front of the spine to secure the area and promote fusion.

Goal: Reduce arm pain, restore spinal stability, and relieve nerve compression.

Cervical Disc Replacement

This motion-preserving procedure is an alternative to fusion for certain patients. It involves:

  • Removing the damaged disc material pressing on the nerve or spinal cord.
  • Inserting an artificial disc that maintains movement at the treated level.

Goal: Relieve pain while preserving natural neck motion.

Posterior Cervical Laminectomy and Fusion

This surgery is performed through the back of the neck to decompress the spinal cord and nerve roots. It includes:

  • Removal of bone and ligament tissue that may be compressing the spinal cord.
  • Placement of screws and rods to stabilize the spine after decompression.

Goal: Alleviate pressure on the spinal cord and stabilize the cervical spine.

Cervical Laminoplasty

Also performed through the back of the neck, this procedure creates more space for the spinal cord while preserving motion. It involves:

  • Reshaping and repositioning bone to widen the spinal canal.
  • Using plates and screws to hold the expanded area open.

Goal: Decompress the spinal cord while maintaining movement in the cervical spine.
